Description

A classic and comforting side dish, the Traditional Green Bean Casserole features tender green beans baked in a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with crispy fried onions. It’s an essential dish for Thanksgiving and other holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 (10 3/4 ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 (14 1/2 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained
  • 2 2/3 cups French fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper. Stir until well combined.
  3. Gently fold in the drained green beans and 1 1/3 cups of the French fried onions.
  4. Pour the mixture into a 3-quart casserole dish.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the mixture is hot and bubbling.
  6. Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining 1 1/3 cups of French fried onions evenly over the top.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy this classic holiday side dish!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute half-and-half for the milk.
  • Fresh green beans can be used, but they must be blanched before adding to the casserole.
  • If you prefer a homemade mushroom sauce, you can prepare one and use it instead of the canned soup.
  • The casserole can be assembled ahead of time, covered, and refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Add the final layer of fried onions just before the last 5 minutes of baking.
