Description

A quick, delicious, and easy recipe for Sloppy Joe Orzo, a comforting one-pan meal perfect for weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups orzo pasta
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Add the orzo pasta and beef broth to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12-15 minutes, or until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove from heat. If using, stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the other seasonings.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef.
  • If the orzo seems too dry before it’s fully cooked, add a little more beef broth or water, a quarter cup at a time.
