Description
A quick, delicious, and easy recipe for Sloppy Joe Orzo, a comforting one-pan meal perfect for weeknights.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups orzo pasta
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
- Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- Add the orzo pasta and beef broth to the skillet. Stir to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12-15 minutes, or until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, stirring occasionally.
- Remove from heat. If using, stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted.
- Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired. Serve hot.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the other seasonings.
- You can substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef.
- If the orzo seems too dry before it’s fully cooked, add a little more beef broth or water, a quarter cup at a time.
