Description

This recipe guides you through making a delicious and easy apple strudel using store-bought puff pastry, filled with spiced apples and raisins.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 3 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and lemon juice. Mix well until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, unfold the puff pastry sheet. If the sheet is very thick, you can gently roll it out slightly to about a 10×12-inch rectangle.
  4. Spoon the apple filling down the center third of the puff pastry sheet, leaving a 1-inch border at the top and bottom.
  5. Cut diagonal slits (about 1 inch apart) into the puff pastry on both sides of the filling.
  6. Fold the top and bottom edges of the pastry over the filling. Starting from one side, fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides, to create a braided pattern. Ensure the filling is fully enclosed.
  7. Carefully transfer the strudel to the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the entire surface of the strudel with the beaten egg wash.
  9. If desired, sprinkle the top with coarse sugar.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and puffed.
  11. Let cool on the baking sheet for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add 1 tablespoon of melted butter or a splash of rum to the apple filling.
  • If your puff pastry sheet is frozen, ensure it is fully thawed in the refrigerator before use.
  • The strudel can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerated for up to 4 days.
  • Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream.
