Description
This recipe guides you through making a delicious and easy apple strudel using store-bought puff pastry, filled with spiced apples and raisins.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 3 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, and lemon juice. Mix well until the apples are evenly coated.
- On a lightly floured surface, unfold the puff pastry sheet. If the sheet is very thick, you can gently roll it out slightly to about a 10×12-inch rectangle.
- Spoon the apple filling down the center third of the puff pastry sheet, leaving a 1-inch border at the top and bottom.
- Cut diagonal slits (about 1 inch apart) into the puff pastry on both sides of the filling.
- Fold the top and bottom edges of the pastry over the filling. Starting from one side, fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides, to create a braided pattern. Ensure the filling is fully enclosed.
- Carefully transfer the strudel to the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the entire surface of the strudel with the beaten egg wash.
- If desired, sprinkle the top with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the strudel is golden brown and puffed.
- Let cool on the baking sheet for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can add 1 tablespoon of melted butter or a splash of rum to the apple filling.
- If your puff pastry sheet is frozen, ensure it is fully thawed in the refrigerator before use.
- The strudel can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerated for up to 4 days.
- Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream.
