A hearty and flavorful ham hock soup, packed with tender meat and vegetables, perfect for a comforting meal.
Ingredients
- 1 ham hock
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 cups chicken broth
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1 cup cooked pasta or rice
Instructions
- Rinse the ham hock under cold water.
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine the ham hock, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, chicken broth, bay leaf, and thyme.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for at least 2 hours, or until the ham hock is tender and the meat is falling off the bone.
- Remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat, discarding the skin and bone.
- Return the shredded meat to the pot.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- If desired, stir in cooked pasta or rice.
- Simmer for another 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Serve hot.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can roast the ham hock before adding it to the soup.
- Feel free to add other vegetables like potatoes, peas, or corn.
