Description

A delightful recipe for golden honey bagels with a subtle sweet twist, perfect for breakfast or a snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (for boiling water)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in salt and vegetable oil.
  3. Gradually add flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal portions.
  7. Roll each portion into a rope and form into a bagel shape by pinching the ends together.
  8. Place bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rest for 15-20 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  10. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Stir in 1 tablespoon of honey.
  11. Carefully add bagels to boiling water, 2-3 at a time, for 30 seconds per side.
  12. Remove bagels from water with a slotted spoon and place back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  13. Brush bagels with beaten egg wash.
  14. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  15. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the dough.
  • Experiment with different toppings like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or cinnamon sugar after brushing with egg wash.
  • Ensure the water is at the correct temperature for the yeast to activate properly.
