- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon honey (for boiling water)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in salt and vegetable oil.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a rope and form into a bagel shape by pinching the ends together.
- Place bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rest for 15-20 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Stir in 1 tablespoon of honey.
- Carefully add bagels to boiling water, 2-3 at a time, for 30 seconds per side.
- Remove bagels from water with a slotted spoon and place back on the parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Brush bagels with beaten egg wash.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the dough.
- Experiment with different toppings like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or cinnamon sugar after brushing with egg wash.
- Ensure the water is at the correct temperature for the yeast to activate properly.
