Description

Crispy on the outside, gooey and cheesy on the inside, these homemade mozzarella sticks are a crowd-pleasing appetizer perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese, cut into 1/2-inch thick sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Pat the mozzarella sticks dry with paper towels.
  2. Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with salt and pepper.
  3. Dip each mozzarella stick first in flour, shaking off excess. Then dip in the egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. Finally, dredge in the panko mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
  4. Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes, or until firm. This helps prevent them from melting too quickly when fried.
  5. Heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Carefully add the frozen mozzarella sticks to the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowld the pan.
  7. Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the mozzarella sticks with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately with your favorite marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add Italian seasoning or garlic powder to the panko breadcrumbs.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature before frying. If it’s too cool, the mozzarella will melt out; if it’s too hot, the breading will burn before the cheese melts.
  • Freezing the breaded mozzarella sticks is a crucial step for achieving the best results.
