Description
A quick and delicious recipe for easy French dip sandwiches, perfect for a weeknight meal or a casual gathering.
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds thinly sliced roast beef (deli-style)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 4 crusty French rolls or baguettes, split lengthwise
- 1 tablespoon butter, softened (optional)
- Provolone or Swiss cheese slices (optional)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and lightly browned, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the beef broth and add the Worcestershire sauce and dried thyme. Bring to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the broth simmer for at least 15-20 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- While the broth simmers, you can lightly toast the inside of the French rolls. If desired, spread with softened butter.
- If using cheese, place cheese slices on the bottom half of the rolls.
- To assemble the sandwiches, dip the bottom halves of the rolls into the hot au jus for a few seconds until lightly soaked.
- Pile a generous amount of roast beef onto the soaked roll halves.
- Place the top halves of the rolls onto the beef.
- Serve immediately with the remaining au jus for dipping.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can use a combination of beef broth and beef consommé.
- If you have more time, you can caramelize the onions for a deeper flavor.
- Serve with a side of horseradish sauce or a creamy Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
