Description

A delightful fusion of crunchy saltines, sweet caramel, and warm cinnamon sugar, creating a uniquely addictive toffee treat inspired by churros.

Ingredients

  • 1 sleeve saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (milk, semi-sweet, or dark)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for melting chocolate)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, covering the surface.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir constantly until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a boil.
  4. Boil the caramel mixture for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the hot caramel evenly over the saltine crackers, ensuring they are completely covered.
  6. Sprinkle the cinnamon evenly over the caramel. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the cinnamon.
  7. Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a minute to soften, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the top.
  9. If the chocolate isn’t spreading smoothly, stir in the tablespoon of vegetable oil to help it melt and spread.
  10. Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature, or speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, until the chocolate is set.
  11. Once set, break the churro saltine toffee into pieces.

Notes

  • For an extra churro flavor, you can mix a little extra cinnamon into the melted chocolate before spreading it.
  • Ensure the caramel is boiled for the correct amount of time to achieve the right consistency.
  • Churros are typically fried, but this recipe captures the cinnamon-sugar essence.
