Description
A recipe for classic chocolate crinkle cookies, known for their rich, fudgy interior and characteristic cracked, powdered sugar coating.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until firm enough to handle.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Place the powdered sugar in a shallow bowl.
- Scoop the chilled dough using a small cookie scoop (about 1.5 tablespoons) and roll it into smooth balls.
- Generously roll each dough ball in the powdered sugar, ensuring it is completely coated. The thicker the coating, the more prominent the ‘crinkle’ will be.
- Place the coated balls 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies should look set on the edges but still slightly soft in the center.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- Dough must be sufficiently chilled (at least 2 hours) or it will be too sticky to roll and the powdered sugar will absorb into the dough.
- For extra intense color and flavor, use Dutch-process cocoa powder.
- Ensure the dough balls are heavily coated in powdered sugar before baking for the best cracked appearance.
- Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
