Description

A recipe for classic chocolate crinkle cookies, known for their rich, fudgy interior and characteristic cracked, powdered sugar coating.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk (any kind)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until firm enough to handle.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Place the powdered sugar in a shallow bowl.
  8. Scoop the chilled dough using a small cookie scoop (about 1.5 tablespoons) and roll it into smooth balls.
  9. Generously roll each dough ball in the powdered sugar, ensuring it is completely coated. The thicker the coating, the more prominent the ‘crinkle’ will be.
  10. Place the coated balls 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies should look set on the edges but still slightly soft in the center.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Dough must be sufficiently chilled (at least 2 hours) or it will be too sticky to roll and the powdered sugar will absorb into the dough.
  • For extra intense color and flavor, use Dutch-process cocoa powder.
  • Ensure the dough balls are heavily coated in powdered sugar before baking for the best cracked appearance.
  • Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
