Ingredients
- 6 medium apples (about 2.5 lbs), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate or an 8×8 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice.
- In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.
- Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add 1/4 cup of chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) to the oat topping.
- If your apples are very tart, you may want to increase the brown sugar slightly.
- Make sure the butter is cold when cutting it into the dry ingredients for the best crumble texture.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave.
