Description

This Amish Applesauce Cake is a moist and flavorful cake, often made with simple ingredients and spiced with cinnamon, offering a comforting taste of Amish tradition.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the applesauce and milk.
  6. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the applesauce mixture to the creamed butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  7. If using, gently fold in the chopped nuts.
  8. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar.
  • Ensure your applesauce is unsweetened to control the cake’s sweetness.
  • The spices can be adjusted to your personal preference.
  • This cake can also be baked in a Bundt pan or as cupcakes. Adjust baking time accordingly.
