Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
- Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- In a separate bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the applesauce and milk.
- Alternately add the dry ingredients and the applesauce mixture to the creamed butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- If using, gently fold in the chopped nuts.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar if desired.

- For a richer flavor, you can use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar.
